Beginner's Guide: How to Install Kitchen Cabinets

Installing kitchen cabinets yourself can feel like a daunting task, but with proper preparation and attention to detail, you can achieve professional results. Follow this step-by-step guide to get started:

 

1. Plan Your Layout

Before you begin, carefully measure your kitchen space. Take note of:

  • Wall dimensions (height, width, and depth).
  • Locations of electrical outlets, plumbing, and windows.

Sketch out a layout that includes the exact dimensions of each cabinet. This plan will act as your guide during installation.

2. Mark Up the Wall

Using your layout, mark the following on the wall:

  • The top line for the upper cabinets.
  • The bottom line for the base cabinets.
  • Stud locations (use a stud finder for accuracy).

Marking these lines ensures precise placement and alignment.

3. Position the First Cabinet

Start with the corner or end cabinet. Align it with your wall marks to ensure it is in the correct position. Use a level to double-check the alignment.

4. Remove Cabinet Doors and Drawers

If you’re replacing old cabinets, begin by removing their doors, drawers, and shelves. This step makes them lighter and easier to handle during removal and installation.

5. Shim Large Bows

If your walls or floors are uneven, use shim stock (thin, adjustable wooden wedges) to fill gaps. This step ensures your cabinets sit flush and level against the wall.

6. Start with the Upper Cabinets

Installing the upper cabinets first prevents the base cabinets from getting in the way. Work systematically:

  • Lift the first cabinet into place.
  • Use clamps to hold it steady.
  • Double-check its alignment with the wall marks and ensure it is level.

7. Clamp, Drill, and Fasten

Once aligned, secure the cabinet:

  • Drill pilot holes into the studs to avoid splitting the wood.
  • Use strong cabinet mounting screws to fasten the cabinet to the wall.
  • Repeat this process for the remaining cabinets, connecting adjacent ones with clamps for a seamless fit.

8. Use a Block of Wood for Scribing

If the walls are uneven, use a block of wood to scribe (mark and trim) the edge of the cabinet to fit snugly against the wall. This step is essential for a polished look.

9. Use Good Cabinet Mounting Screws

Invest in high-quality screws specifically designed for cabinet installation. These screws provide the strength needed to securely hold your cabinets in place.

Final Tips:

  • Double-check measurements at every step.
  • Have a helper for lifting and positioning cabinets, especially the upper ones.
  • Take your time—proper preparation and careful execution are key to success.
